Defensive sprays are chemical deterrents used to incapacitate or deter an aggressor. Pepper spray is the most common example, causing irritation to the eyes, throat, and lungs. Mace is a widely recognized term associated with defensive sprays and, in many products sold today, refers to a pepper spray formulation. Because of this pairing, pepper spray and mace are grouped together as defensive sprays. Water spray, shampoo, and grapes don’t function as defensive sprays—water spray is just liquid, shampoo is for cleaning hair, and grapes are food. Thus, pepper spray and mace are the defensive sprays.
